Volunteering in the Gardens of Totnes
There are so many gardening opportunities in our local community of Totnes. So we’re putting together a shortlist of some which we recommend to anybody joining in. Here’s a summary reminder of when and where gardening for volunteers is happening :o)
SUNDAYS: [First Sunday in the month] 11am-1pm: Follaton Forest Garden & Nursery at the Arboretum. [Second Sunday each month] 2-4pm: Fruit & Nut Tree care in Follaton Arboretum & Totnes Cemetery with Incredible Edibles.
MONDAYS: Leechwell Garden, Heathway, Totnes from 10am - noon. [Second Monday each month] Incredible Edible at the Rockery site 10am to 12.30. Gardening For Health at The Lamb Garden, Totnes on Mondays 2-4.30pm.
TUESDAYS: School Farm Organics, Dartington Estate from 8.30 to 11am. Foxhole Community Garden next door to School Farm from 9.30am-3.30pm. [Third Tuesday each month] Incredible Edible, Steamer Quay, Bridgetown from 4-6pm.
WEDNESDAYS: Huxham’s Cross Biodynamic Farm from 10am - 4pm. [frequent dates] Trees For Health, Beason Agroforestry Farm, 11am-4pm.
THURSDAYS: Again, School Farm Organics and Foxhole Community Garden, same times. School Farm CSA 10am-4pm.
Totnes Gardens: a great team of dedicated green-fingered folk with some expert knowledge taking care of several public community spaces including the China Blue roundabout, Coronation Road flower bed, the Banana Bed at Steamer Quay, Moorashes garden [The Ducks], the Museum herb garden. Also leading the way for the town in its South West In Bloom annual entry onto the RHS scheme. Incredible Edible. With regular sessions at it’s various sites: Steamer Quay - third Tuesday each month, 12.30-2pm. The Rockery by the Rugby Club beside the Railway Station - second Monday of each month, 12.30-2pm. Follaton Arboretum and Town Cemetery - Orchard & Nut Groves: second Sunday of each month, 2-4pm. All followed by a shared picnic. Look out for tree-planting days around town, of 100 new trees in memory of WWI, and special celebrations in their orchards, as part of a new Orchards Link project. Follaton Forest Garden and Tree Nursery. There is a monthly play/work session (held on the first Sunday of each month from 11am to 1pm) which welcomes anyone, for any length of time. Tools are provided and volunteers usually stay on for a shared picnic. Under the guidance of Larch Maxey and Nicky Baines, they care for the shrubs, trees and other plants on the site as well as in the tree nursery created to supply community projects with fruit/nut trees and other useful plants. Gardening For Health at The Lamb Garden. Running weekly Gardening for Health sessions on Monday afternoons from 2-4.30pm, led by a garden tutor at this info/demo hub in The Lamb Garden. Great small space with raised beds, accommodating small groups. Tools and refreshments provided. Just turn up. Huxham’s Cross Biodynamic Farm. Located just north of Totnes, Huxham’s Cross has recently opened it’s project gates and there are some exciting plans afoot. Volunteers are welcome on Working Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm. Find out more about the Apricot Centre for sustainable living by contacting Huxhams Cross Biodynamic Farm. Foxhole Community Farm. Another new gem, located beside Old School Farm on the Dartington Estate. At present volunteer days run on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 to 3:30. Anyone is welcome whatever their interest. You may also be interested in getting involved in another aspect of the garden such as helping with promotion, organising events or running a workshop. Old School Farm Organics. Situated on the Dartington Estate by Foxhole Community Garden, there are regular volunteer days for anybody to come along to every Tuesday and Thursdays. Volunteers can either help with the salad harvest (early start 8am to 11ish) or people come in later to suit and help with the growing and general maintenance of salad crops and edible flowers. School Farm CSA. Set within the Dartington Estate School Farm complex, and running a Veg box scheme as well as Schumacher Horticultural courses. Volunteering is every Thursday from 10am until 4pm. Come and join us, get your hands dirty, socialise, learn about growing, and support your local community farm! Leechwell Garden. The unique and beautiful space at Leechwell garden offers a quiet sanctuary for all who find their way here along Leechwell Lane or from the centre of town. Volunteer gardening sessions are fortnightly on Monday mornings from 10am - 12, or any part of that you can spare, it's all useful! All are very welcome! Tools provided. Trees for Health. Now based at Beason’s Agroforestry Farm for some years running the Discover Forest Foods programme, there are regular Agroforestry Volunteer days for anybody wishing to join in. Tools are provided and often a lift from Totnes can be arranged. Trees for Health also have helped create tree nurseries around the District, including at Sharpham House, Ashprington and at the Follaton Arboretum.
